PIERRE – In the opening of the defense of their fifth straight football title, the Pierre Governors did not disappoint their home fans Saturday.
Lincoln Kienholz threw six touchdown passes in the first half as Pierre ran past Aberdeen Central 54-15 at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
Jack Merkwan and Jett Zabel had three touchdown catches each. Kienholz also ran for another score in the third quarter. Jayden Wiebe also ran a kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown later in that quarter.
Kienholz was 28-of-33 passing for 438 yards, eclipsing his own school record of 400 yards, set last year against Aberdeen Central in the regular season. Zabel had 13 catches for 201 yards, establishing career highs in both. Merkwan had nine catches for 198 yards, with the nine receptions tying a career high.
The Governors scored on six of their first seven possessions and led 41-7 at halftime.
Karson Carda had a 64-yard touchdown run for Aberdeen Central.
