PIERRE – Collegiate-level summer baseball is nearly assured to continue in Pierre.
On September 13, the City of Pierre approved a facility use agreement with Zap Baseball, LLC, a group of mostly local citizens, to have a new collegiate-level team play at Hyde Stadium.
Former Pierre Trappers General Manager Jackson Bruce is part of the Zap Baseball group. Bruce told DRG Media Group Sports that a deal is close, though not finalized yet, to have a Pierre team in Independence League Baseball, a league that began play this past season after being formed by teams who split from the now-defunct Expedition League and its owner, Steve Wagner.
Speaking before the Pierre City Commission on September 13, Bruce detailed the individuals that comprise Zap Baseball.
Bruce said that having so much local involvement is a big plus.
Bruce emphasized that the new team will not be known as the Trappers.
The new agreement is for three years and is built as the previous agreement was between the city and the Expedition League. Again, Post 8 Legion Baseball will have the scheduling preference for practice and games.
In a news release, Pierre City Administrator Kristi Honeywell said, “The new team will be locally managed and much of its financial backing is coming from local investors. I fully anticipate that they will be an excellent partner to Post 8 and other interested community organizations.”
