HIGHLIGHTS: Tyler Hubbard explains why he didn’t change the title of his song “5 Foot 9”, after finding out his wife Hayley is 5’10”. First, it was already written, and you don’t change a finished product. Plus, he wasn’t sure at the time if he would even record it, so it wouldn’t have made a difference.
FULL STORY: If you’re still wondering why Tyler Hubbard’s wife Hayley didn’t bop him on the head when he got her height wrong on “5 Foot 9”, this will help. First of all, he didn’t know how tall she was. (Okay, maybe that’s worth a bop.)
But the reason he didn’t bother to find out for sure is because he was in the studio with other musicians writing it. When the wheels are in motion you keep going until it’s a finished product. And then, that product needs to be left alone.
Plus, he wasn’t sure he was going to record it. It might’ve gone to a different singer . . . and if that happened, then getting the height wrong was no big deal.
(This is from an interview on “CMT Hot 20 Countdown”.)
One more thing, just to be clear. He did ask about her exact height when he got home that night, and she told him she’s 5’10”. But again, it was a finished song and needed to be left alone. Good move, because it became a #1 hit.
