ABERDEEN – For a time Thursday, indications were that Pierre Governor Volleyball would make a return trip to the state tournament. Then, Aberdeen Central rallied, just as Pierre had done to them in their previous match.
Aberdeen Central came from two sets down for a AA SoDak 16 win on their home floor 24-26, 12-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-8.
Pierre took advantage of 13 floor errors by Aberdeen Central in the first set, then breezed through the second set before the Golden Eagles rallied, using their typical aggressive serve and employing roll shots to neutralize the Govenors’ block.
Aberdeen Central (14-11) was led by the 16 kills of Lauryn Burckhard. Ashley Wangler tallied 11 kills and two blocks. Ayrlie Waldo served four aces.
Abby Kropp, one of seven seniors, led Pierre (10-11) with 17 kills. Campbell Boddicker and Reese Terwilliger had 11 kills each. Makayla Sherwood had three blocks and Terwilliger had two. Aleise Christopherson had 39 set assists. Campbell Cronin had eight aces, including seven in a 10-0 run during the third set.
Aberdeen Central will play top seed and defending champion Harrisburg in the first round of the state tournament Thursday at the Summit Arena at The Monument in Rapid City.
