Nine Pierre Governors received 2023 11AA All-State honors from the South Dakota High School Football Coaches Association. Voting was conducted by 11AA coaches.
Tight end Jett Zabel was honored, as were offensive lineman Matthew Brewer, defensive lineman Emmit Andersen, linebackers Trey Lewis and Chance Carda, defensive back Spencer Easland, and athlete Cade Kaiser.
Running back Brock Moser and wide receiver George Stalley earned honorable mention.
Zabel, a senior, earned a second consecutive all-state honor and became the Governors’ all-time leader in receptions and touchdown receptions in 2023. He caught 58 passes for 995 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Brewer, a senior, was vital on the Governor offensive line that gave protection to allow the Pierre offense to average just over 417 yards per game.
Andersen, a senior and third-year starter, led the Governors with six sacks and had 17 and a half tackles for losses, easily the team high. Andersen totaled 51 tackles, 24 of which were solo, and had two fumble recoveries.
Lewis, a senior, had 43 tackles, including 30 solo, three and a half tackles for losses and two interceptions.
Senior Carda was Pierre’s leading tackler with 68, including 39 solo. He had one and a half sacks, six and a half tackles for losses and a fumble recovery.

He did have one reception this season. It was the longest play in Pierre Governor and state championship football history, a 99-yard pass from Zabel in the Governors’ 35-7 win over Yankton on November 10 that gave the program a record seventh straight 11AA state title.
Moser, a senior, was second in Pierre rushing with 420 yards and six touchdowns.
