WATERTOWN, S.D. – Milbank native Kalen DeBoer, who coached the University of Washington to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the College Football Playoff, has been named the South Dakota Sports Celebrity of the Year by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.
John Stiglemeier and Jimmy Rodgers, head coaches of the South Dakota State football team were named College Coach of the Year award winners while SDSU is the College Football Team of the Year after winning the FCS National Championship in January.
Myah Selland of South Dakota State womens basketball is the College Female Athlete award winner and Dave Krauth of Augustana Women’s basketball is the Female College Coach of the Year award winner. The College Women’s Team award winner is the Dakota State Women’s Basketball team.
Simeon Birnbaum of Rapid City is the Male High School Athlete of the Year Jeff Gruenhagen of DeSmet is the Boys High School Coach of the Year award winner and Dakota Valley Boys Basketball the High School Male Team of the Year.
Gracelyn Lieseth and Kami Wadsworth of Hamlin Track and Field are the Female High School Athlete Award winner while Sioux Falls Washington’s Jamie Parish is the High School Girl Coach of the Year. Estelline-Hendricks Gymnastics is the High School Girls Team of the Year.
Other award winners are:
- Independent Male Athlete Ezra Aderhold of Aberdeen.
- Independent Female Athlete Bergan Reilly of Sioux Falls.
- Independent Team Dell Rapids Legion Baseball team.
The SDSWA has annually presented recognition to the state’s sports figures in a number of different categories since 1954.
