Brookings, S.D. – South Dakota State University’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams both won the Summit League tournament this past week, guaranteeing spots in the respective NCAA 68-team fields. However, they had to wait until Sunday night to find out where they would be seeded, and who their first opponent would be.
The men, who defeated Denver last Tuesday for their 7th Summit League title in school history, earned the 15th seed in the East side of the bracket. This pits the Jackrabbits against 2nd-seeded Iowa State, who is coming off a Big 12 championship win over AP #1 ranked Houston. The game will be played in Omaha, Nebraska on March 21 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
History is not on South Dakota State’s side in their matchup with Iowa State. In NCAA Tournament history, 15 seeds are just 11-141 all-time against the 2nd-seeded team. ESPN BET currently has the Jackrabbits as a 16.5-point underdog.
For the SDSU women, things look more favorably. After a perfect 16-0 Summit League record, the team breezed through the conference tournament for their 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last 16 seasons. Their active 21-game win streak helped earn them the 12-seed in Regional 4, where they will play 5th-seeded Utah. The game will start at 9 p.m. CT on March 23 in Spokane, Washington.
