It’s been over 4.5 years since Pierre moved all of its recycling collection containers to the city’s Solid Waste Facility on East Park Street.
To access the containers, each Pierre residential utility customer received an electronic key card to open the gate– any time of day or night.
Solid Waste Manager Val Keller says those original key cards are still what’s used to open the gate.
If you aren’t a Pierre residential utility customer, Keller says there’s a $3.50 fee to get into the area with the containers.
Pierre residential utility customers who haven’t previously had a key card for the recycling and yard waste area may obtain one from the office at the Solid Waste Facility or from City Hall. Pierre residential utility customers who have a lost or damaged key card may purchase a new one at the Solid Waste Facility or from City Hall at a cost of $25.
For larger items, Pierre residential utility customers received the annual solid waste free load coupon with their March utility bill. The coupons are valid through November 2024 and are intended to clear large items out of yards, garages and homes. Customers who receive their utility bill electronically are still entitled to a coupon. The staff at the Solid Waste Facility maintains a list of those customers and will issue a coupon at the time of disposal.
Additionally, the solid waste department offers free paint swap or household cleaner swap programs. Crushed asphalt and yard compost can be purchased at the facility.
