Minnesota has a new youngest goal scorer, and his name is Carter Lucero. And on his seventh birthday, he did something that no one else his age can claim.
Lucero, a Tuscon, Arizona native, got the opportunity to lead the Loons out ahead of their match against D.C. United, and he made the most of his opportunity. Carter took the ball straight down the field out of the opening kickoff before threading the needle with a shot that found its way through the legs of goalkeeper Alex Bono.
“He looked great in training,” said Apple TV commentator Neil Sika, “and we were waiting to see what he just showed us.”
Lucero, who is in the midst of a fight against cystic fibrosis, stood out to the team in preseason training camp with the Loons. How much did he stand out? Enough to sign a lifetime contract with Minnesota United.
The young attacker, who, according to the club, “has proven himself to be an extremely tough and resilient footballer from the day he was born,” impressed all MLS fans at the game with a speedy run, a perfect finish, and an on-point celebration. It’s a goal he’d been waiting on his whole life, and one the entire Wonderwall won’t soon forget.
