JANUARY 21, 2025:
The Pierre City Commission has approved (Jan. 14, 2025) a request to bid the city’s 2025 curb and gutter contract.
Staff Engineer Caleb Huizenga says the bid breaks the work into two schedules to help prioritize the work and optimize construction schedules with other projects planned for this summer.
Bids are due back by Feb. 6. If they come back favorably, Pierre will replace about 40 blocks of curb gutter during this year’s construction season.
Properly functioning curb and gutter conveys water away from the street surface to prevent moisture from penetrating the street and causing damage.
Additionally, the cost of the slurry seal work done on some streets in Pierre during the 2024 construction season is costing the city about $20,000 less than anticipated.
Staff Engineer Caleb Huizenga says the decrease accounts for a quantity adjustment because the contractor didn’t use as much material as expected.
The Pierre City Commission approved the final change order and payment during their meeting last week (Jan. 14, 2025).
Slurry seal is technology that was first used by Pierre last year. It’s an oil-based seal that improves traction control and prevents moisture from penetrating the street surface.
JANUARY 2, 2025:
The Pierre City Commission has begun planning for the street projects that will be done in 2025.
Staff Engineer Caleb Huizenga says they have a few different projects on the schedule.
Currently on the schedule are the stretch of Broadway Avenue between Euclid and Jefferson Avenues, a handful of blocks that include underground utility work and many short stretches of roadway throughout Pierre city limits.
Bids for the paving contract are due Jan. 23, 2025. If bids come in higher than the engineer’s estimate, Huizenga says they’ll need to prioritize which projects are completed first.
2024 was the first year the Pierre Street Department used a slurry seal process on some streets. Huizenga says early indications are that it has worked as well as they’d hoped it would.
The South Dakota Dept. of Transportation will begin rebuilding Euclid Avenue this spring. Although SDDOT is leading that reconstruction project, the City of Pierre is replacing and updating utilities located under Euclid in conjunction with that state project.
