The USDA Forest Service anticipates conducting a prescribed burn as soon as Monday (March 10, 2025) on part the Fort Pierre National Grasslands in Lyman County.
The 36-acre site is along US Highway 83 in the 83 Triangle Pasture– a.k.a. Kennedy Wildlife Area. Burning could occur anytime on or after Monday. Ignition will only occur if suitable weather and sufficient personnel are present. Burns would be completed following direction in the relevant burn plan.
The purpose of this prescribed burn is to increase the dominance and diversity of native vegetation. Objectives include improvements to livestock forage and wildlife habitat quality, as well as reductions in fuel loading.
Adjacent landowners, visible homeowners and local fire and law enforcement departments will be contacted prior to ignition. Smoke from the fires may be visible from US Highway 83, Interstate 90 and the communities of Draper, Fort Pierre, Kennebec, Murdo, Pierre, Presho and Vivian.
