It seemed the Spurs were finished playing with their food as they put away the Timberwolves handedly in game six, winning 139-109 to finish off the series Friday night.
After a 29-point drubbing in game five by San Antonio, the series shifted back to Minnesota with the Spurs leading 3-2. The Timberwolves were hoping for a bounce back, statement game to force a pivotal game seven, but the Spurs would prove to simply be too much.
San Antonio jumped out to a nine-point first quarter lead and didn’t look back. At the half, they were leading by 13, though the game felt more out of reach than the score would have you believe.
On the back of Stephon Castle’s 32-points, the Spurs were able to ultimately pull away in the third quarter leaving no doubt they are one of the NBA’s top title contenders. Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was left with nothing else to do but offer congratulations to the San Antonio bench as the imminent defeat was lingering in the fourth quarter.
In a series that starred an unstoppable force in Victor Wembanyama, it was his supporting cast that put away the Wolves for 2026. On top of Castle’s huge offensive night, he also reeled in 11 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox also posted 21-points, going an impressive 8-10 from the field.
Minnesota was led by Edwards who finished the game with 24-points in the loss, going a hollow 9-26 from the floor. “I just tip my hat to them,” Edwards said. “They were just the better team.” That was paired with disappointing performances from Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle who combined for just three points.
Wolves head coach Chris Finch did not mince words, practically admitting the Spurs were the better team in the series, “It just felt like we kind of ran out of bullets as this series went on,” said Finch.
The Spurs now head to the Western Conference Finals where they will face off with the reigning NBA Champions in the Oklahoma City Thunder. That series will begin on Monday night.
