In what felt like the blink of an eye, the Oahe Zap played their final home regular season game Wednesday night at Hyde Stadium. The Zap had recently stopped a losing skid after picking up the 10-0 win on Tuesday night, and wanted to give the huge crowd at Hyde one final show before they go on the road to wrap up the regular season and embark on another playoff run.
Quinn Ludvigsen got the start as Jamy Haberger wanted his lefty hurler to get one final start as a tune-up for the playoff series coming early next week. Ludvigsen would pitch into some trouble in the first inning after an error allowed the leadoff hitter to reach followed by a few walks that would load the bases. A few singles and a wild pitch allowed three runs to cross as the Bison charged out to a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Connor Goldberg continued his offensive tear this summer with a triple into the gap that would set up Dom DeCarlo perfectly for a sac-fly to secure the Zap’s first run of the ballgame.
The 3-1 score stayed put for a majority of the game as the Zap continued to put runners in scoring position but were just unable to break through. That is until the seventh inning when the Zap were finally able to string some offense together and piece together a comeback. A leadoff walk from Dillon Bowie followed by a sac-bunt by Manny Ealey set the wheels in motion. Gavin Fraser drove in Bowie with a double to left, followed by an RBI single from Cy Taylor to make tie the game at three apiece. Connor Goldberg’s second hit of the night drove in Taylor to make it 4-3 and the Zap held their first lead of the evening.
In the ninth, head coach Jamy Haberger sent out Brady Glenn to earn the save which drew a standing ovation from the home crowd. Glenn, who was honored before the game, has spent five straight summers in Pierre with the Zap and was making his final appearance as a player. He would put a few Bison on base and raise the intensity a bit, but Glenn would dig in and record the final three outs for the victory. Glenn earned the save and also a Gatorade bath in right field as he and his longtime teammates celebrated the win. We asked Glenn about his thoughts and emotions on taking the mound one final time while also coming up in a clutch spot for his team:
The Zap now head to Spearfish for their final regular season series later this week before kicking off the postseason against Casper. If the Zap can win the playoff series in Casper, they will punch their ticket to the Championship Series for the second straight year.
