A 50-year-old man from Rapid City is in custody following a Friday morning (July 24, 2026) pursuit with the South Dakota Highway Patrol in Box Elder, South Dakota, and the surrounding area.
Preliminary information from the South Dakota highway Patrol indicates the driver of a 2019 Toyota Tundra left Love’s Truck Stop in Box Elder after Pennington County dispatch received a call of a theft on the premises. The Box Elder Police Department located the vehicle traveling east on I-90 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The South Dakota Highway Patrol joined the pursuit which extended to Highway 14/16 and rural roads before turning west on I-90. Shortly after crossing into Wyoming, the vehicle entered a spin and ran off the road. The driver attempted to regain control when a South Dakota Highway Patrol unit pinned the Toyota against a tree. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.
Other agencies involved were the Box Elder Police Department, the Meade County Police Department, the Pennington County Sherriff’s Office, the Cook County Sherriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
