MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University Softball Head Coach Derek Lien was fired due to his pleading guilty on a charge of driving under the influence.
Lien pleaded guilty on Thursday. The university made the announcement of Lien’s departure on Tuesday.
On May 22, Lien was charged with one DUI count after, according to a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper, blowing .09 on a preliminary breath test. Lien later completed a treatment program.
On Thursday in Davison County Court, Lien entered a guilty plea and received a suspended imposition of sentence, meaning that the record of his DUI will be sealed if he meets terms of probation. Lien also was ordered to pay $809.50 in fines and court costs.
Lien was 25-57 in two seasons as the Tigers’ softball coach, including 15-29 this past season.
