Lilly M. Osterkamp, 98, of Agar, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the Onida Methodist Church, Onida, SD with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding. Burial will follow in the Onida Cemetery.
Lilly Marie Mitchell was born April 15, 1925, at Wendt, SD to Milton and Anna (Anderson) Mitchell. She lived on farms near Wendt and Van Metre, SD where she attended country school through the 8th grade.
At the age of 13, Lilly began cleaning house for Mrs. Norvel Copper as well as taking care of her dad’s sheep. She then moved to Pierre, SD and worked at Dorn’s Bakery, from there she went to work at the St. Charles Hotel. Later she worked at Robert’s Laundry, Thomas Grocery and Gillis’ Dry Cleaning. While working at Thomas Grocery she met Martin “Vernon” Osterkamp, and they were married May 12, 1947. They were married for almost 75 years before Vernon passed away on April 17, 2022. To this union 11 children were born.
In the 1980’s, Vernon and Lilly bought the Agar Grocery Store and ran it for six years. Lilly worked hard caring for her children, hired hands, and working in the fields whenever needed. Lilly was a very creative person.
Those left to cherish her life include her nine children: Karen Longcrier, Kittery, ME, Vernon “Martin” Osterkamp, Agar, SD, Jan Osterkamp, Hay Springs, NE, Royal (Janet) Osterkamp, Willmar, MN, Bennie Osterkamp, Honey Path, SC, Lill “Verna” (Charlie) Anderson, Agar, SD, Betty Osterkamp, Agar, SD, Penny (Jake) Van Brandwijk, Florence, KY, and David (Michele) Osterkamp, Pierre, SD; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; twin son, Roy; daughter, Darleen Frye; son-in-law, Bibb Longcrier; five sisters; great grandson, Walter Osterkamp; great-great granddaughter, Natalie Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.
Lilly loved the Lord Jesus and all of the people that she met. Thank you, mom, for all the love you showed us. We love you! Into the Lord’s hands we give you!
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Lilly’s honor may be made to the charity of your choosing.
