Pierre city employees will get a pay increase next year. How much of an increase, depends on where they work.
Mayor Steve Harding broke down the pay increase recommendation for the Police Department, Emergency Services, city management and city commissioners (Dec. 5, 2023).
Harding said pay raises for other city employees were made during negotiations of the union contracts two and three years ago.
The electric and civilian union employee contracts will be renegotiated this coming summer (2024).
Pierre has two primary revenue sources– sales tax collections and utility rates.
Sales tax receipts support the Police, Fire and Street Departments, Parks and Recreation, Rawlins Library, City Administration and outside agencies such as PEDCO (Pierre Economic Development Corporation), PARS (Pierre Area Referral Service), the South Dakota Discovery Center, the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area and others.
Pierre’s 2024 budget has been set at $57.3 million.
