Beverly Ann Melius was born June 16, 1935, to Richard and Marjorie (Rohatsch) Melius at the family homestead in Faulkton. She was brought up on the family farm. She attended rural Melius Country School, and Cresbard High School, graduating in 1953. She furthered her education at the National School of Business in Rapid City, graduating with a degree in bookkeeping. On April 25, 1955, she married the love of her life, Roger Hanson of Faulkton, and together they built a beautiful life full of love and happiness. Into this union they were blessed with six children. Throughout life her employment included after college working at the ASC office in Faulkton, 212 Café, and was an in-home daycare provider.
Beverly was a woman of many interests, but her greatest love was for her family. For many years of her life, she was a stay-at-home mom. She had a love and passion for baking and enjoyed sharing baked goods with her family and friends. She would bake after school goodies for her children and their friends. Her children’s friends would call her mom, and that warmed her heart. Her caramel rolls, homemade bread, buns, and goulash were regularly requested at family gatherings.
Beverly attended all activities and school functions for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with her friends who called themselves the ‘Golden Girls. She made crafts of all kinds and took great pleasure in sharing those crafts with many people throughout her life. She was an avid collector of nick knacks and filled her home she has lived in for 63 years with her many collections.
Beverly was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters Court St. Monica #1436, Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens Center, American Legion Auxiliary for 35 years, Lifetime member of V.F.W. Auxiliary for 55 years, 4-H leader, Domestics Extension Club, American Cancer Society.
Beverly loved volunteering her time within the community, Bounty Bless, delivering meals and wheels, Helping with bingo and other activities with the residents at the Faulkton Senior Living Center. Beverly saved ample time to be active in the Lutheran Memorial Church quilters club that sewed thousands of quilts. These quilts were sent all over the state to different organizations and to those that were less fortunate. She continued enjoying quilting and socializing with her quilters well into her 80’s until mobility ceased to make that possible.
Beverly was an avid gardener and if you visited when she had garden produce, you probably went home with something from her garden. She was always busy canning or freezing her garden produce. She spent many hours working in her flower beds. She would say it was therapeutic, and not work, there were many travelers that came through and would stop to take in the view of the beautiful flowers that could be seen from the highway that was located close to her home.
Grateful for having shared Beverly’s life are her children: son Richard Hanson of Faulkton, SD; daughters: Cynthia Hanson of Huron, SD, Marilyn Hanson and Kathy Hanson of Pierre, SD, and Carol (Gary) Uthe, of Presho, SD.
