Mehlhaff running for reelection to District 24 Senate
State Senator Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre is seeking reelection (Jan. 2, 2024) to his District 24 senate seat.
Mehlhaff says he’s worked hard to be an “engaged, accessible and thoughtful conservative member of the legislature.” He says he’s learned a great deal working on issues and legislation during his first term and he hopes the people of District 24 will trust him to serve a second term.
Mehlhaff was first elected to the State Senate in 2022. During his first term, he served on the Agriculture and Natural Resources and Judiciary committees and as the Vice-Chair of the Local Government and Retirement Laws committees. In between legislative sessions, Mehlhaff was selected by legislative leadership to serve on the County Funding Summer Study, Unified Judicial System’s Indigent Legal Services Task Force, the Interim Rules Review Committee and the Medical Marijuana Advisory Board.
Mehlhaff joins fellow District 24 republicans Representative and House Majority Leader Will Mortenson of Fort Pierre and Representative Mike Weisgram of Fort Pierre who are also seeking reelection. District 24 includes Haakon Hughes, Hyde, Stanley and Sully counties.
Mehlhaff and his wife Annie have lived in the Pierre area for nearly 30 years and have two children. They are active members of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
