PRESHO, S.D. – Pierre Governor wrestlers topped Canton by just one point to win the Lyman Invitational, the Mid-Dakota Monster, Friday and Saturday (Jan. 5-6, 2024) at the Lyman Gardens. Pierre totaled 240.5 points to Canton’s 239.5 while Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes came in third at 197.0. Winner and O’Neill, Neb., tied for fourth and fifth with 193.0. The Governors had four wrestlers reach the finals, but only Chance Carda won a championship in the 190-pound weight class. Tristan Spencer suffered his first loss of the season in the finals at 138 as he was beaten by an O’Neill wrestler. Rory McManus of Lyman beat Lucas Chamberlin of Pierre, 6-5, in the finals at 165 pounds and Trey Lewis fell 3-1 to Sam Werdel of Tea Area to take the runner-up spot at 175 in a rematch of last year’s 170-pound State Championship bout. Other championship matches featuring area wrestlers included the 113-pound class, Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County placed second, Maxton Brozik of Winner beat Gavin Braun of KWLPG at 126 and Lucas Lenz of KWLPG won the 157-pound class. Stanley County scored 112 points and placed six wrestlers, led by Hayden Roggow’s fourth-placed effort at 157 pounds.
In the girls tournament, the “Bride of the Monster” held Saturday, Canton tallied 194.0 points while Pierre took second with 151.0. The Governors put two wrestlers at the top of the podium as Sydney Uhrig won the 107-pound weight class and Abbigail Lewis topped the 150-pound bracket. Three others placed third to help the Governor cause. Cateri Yellow Hawk of Sully Buttes finished second at 126 pounds and Unique Clairmont of Todd County was also a runner-up in the 250-pound class among other area wrestlers faring well on Saturday.
