Funeral services for Junior Prasek, 91, of Selby will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, January 12, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date. There will be a visitation from 5-7 PM Thursday at the church. Junior passed away Sunday, January 7, 2024 at the Bowdle Hospital. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
Oscar “Junior” Prasek was born on September 11, 1932 in Herreid to Oscar W. and Dacotah Emma (Perlenfein) Prasek. Junior attended Knudson and Dupper Schools in rural Campbell County. He worked on his parents farm until being drafted into military service in January of 1953. While in the service he was a track vehicle mechanic and an antiaircraft and gun mechanic for the Army. He was honorably discharged in December of 1954.
Junior and Phyllis Landis were married on April 3, 1955 at Norway Lutheran Church. They farmed in rural Mound City for three years before moving to Mobridge in 1958. Junior worked for Iron Works for 8 ½ years in Mobridge. In 1966 they moved to Selby where they have since resided. Junior worked for Sackreiter Steel Building in Mobridge for 5 ½ years and Rabenberg Equipment in Selby for 5 ½ years before taking over as the Bus Superintendent for the Selby School for the next 22 ½ years. When he retired he started his own shop for welding and repair work. He also did shelterbelt cleaning and stump removal. Junior worked on gasoline engines, hit and miss water and air cooled engines. He built go karts and loved his Allis Chalmers tractors.
Junior was very active in the community and was a part of many groups and boards. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and member of the Selby American Legion. On September 27, 1997, he received the Legionaire of the year for District 14, a first for Fredrick Schauer Legion Post 100. Junior and Phyllis initiated the Veterans Memorial project in Selby. He was also a member of the Selby Lions Club and was chosen Lion of the Year in 1993-1994.
Junior is survived by his wife 68 years, Phyllis of Selby, daughters, Deborah Reed of Madison, SD, and Cynthia (Daniel) Nevill of Tea, SD, grandchildren, Brian (Kailah Riedesel) Reed, Laura Reed, Ashley Reed, Michael (Haleigh) Nevill and Christopher Nevill, great grandchildren, Asher and Daniel, brother, Delbert Prasek, sister, Dawn Hanson, and a sister-in-law, Irene Walz.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Greg Reed, and sister, Darlene Moak.
