Floyd D. High Elk, 85, of Eagle Butte, passed away Monday, December 9, 2024, at Cheyenne River Health Center, Eagle Butte, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. MST, Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow with military honors, in St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery, Thunder Butte. A wake service will be 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the church with a procession from the 4-Mile east of town at 4:00p.m.
Floyd Daniel High Elk was born September 28, 1939, in Thunder Butte, SD to Jobe and Estella (Slides Off) High Elk. He grew up in Thunder Butte, attending school at Thunder Butte Day School and the Old Agency. Floyd enlisted in the military on May 2, 1963, and was discharged on May 1, 1965. He was on active duty for two years. He shared how he came home on leave; he rode the bus into Sturgis, SD then had to hitch hike home and started walking. He said, “I got lucky, the mailman picked me up and gave me a ride so far, then I walked again for like two days.” On May 2, 1965, Floyd was transferred to inactive reserve for four years and released from USAR on May 1, 1969. His rank was Specialist Fourth Class/E-4. He was honorably discharged. His specialty in the Army was a Turret Artillery Repairman.
In 1966, Floyd and Lucille married. From this marriage they had three children: Lori, Daniel, and June. They resided in Thunder Butte, then Dupree, and then on to Eagle Butte, SD.
Floyd was a self-taught mechanic, and he knew how to fix cars. He also was a maintenance man for the Dupree Housing Authority.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him including his daughters: Lori (Kevin) and June; his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Jobe and Estella; wife, Lucille; son, Daniel “Danny”; granddaughter, Rikke Rae Voice; sisters: Corrine Red Bird, Maxine Takes The Gun, and Slene Red Bear; and five brothers: Theodore, Aurthur, Wesley, Paul, and Madrick High Elk.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Floyd’s arrangements.
