A man from Pierre is one of this year’s recipients of the annual South Dakota Governors Awards recognizing the achievements of individuals with disabilities.
At a ceremony this week (Oct. 8, 2025) in Pierre, Department of Human Services Secretary Shawnie Rechtenbaugh said four individuals and three organizations would be honored.
Governor Larry Rhoden spoke of the impact of the recipients.
Shawn Lyons from Pierre received the Outstanding Employee with a Disability Award.

He currently works for the state Game Fish and Parks Department. Secretary Kevin Robling spoke about working with Lyons.
Lyons’ remarks in acceptance of the award came from his “monthly musings” segment aired on his Facebook page.
This year’s other honorees who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to ensuring that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to thrive in the workplace are:
- Jim Hoxie, Spearfish – Outstanding Individual with a Disability;
- Shawn Lyons, Pierre – Outstanding Employee with a Disability;
- Eagle Butte Co-op Association, Eagle Butte – Outstanding Private Employer (Small);
- Ken’s SuperFair Foods, Aberdeen – Outstanding Private Employer (Large);
- City of Belle Fourche, Belle Fourche – Outstanding Public Employer;
- Steve Hilton, Piedmont – Outstanding Transition Services; and
- Sandy Neyhart, Sturgis – Distinguished Service.
