People working for the towns of Pierre or Fort Pierre are getting a pay bump in 2026.
Following an executive session of the Fort Pierre City Council this week (Dec. 15, 2025), Mayor Gloria Hanson said Acting Finance Officer Twila Hoffrogge presented a salary resolution noting that the Council had included a 5% employee pay increase in the 2026 budget. A motion, made by Callie Iversen and seconded by Todd Bernhard, to approve a 3.5% increase failed on a 2-4 vote. A second motion, made by Rick Cronin and seconded by Scott Deal, to approve a 3% increase for employees– excluding elected officials– passed on a unanimous vote.
In Pierre, how much of a salary increase an employee will receive, depends on which department they work for.
During a city commission meeting earlier this month (Dec. 9, 2025), Mayor Steve Harding broke down the pay increase recommendations into three separate categories.
Pay increases for Pierre Police Department employees were approved last month (Nov. 4, 2025). Harding said law enforcement agencies at all levels have challenges hiring and keeping officers, so Pierre has to be competitive.
The Pierre City Commission unanimously approved all of the recommended employee pay raises.
