Jan. 21, 2026:
The Fort Pierre City Council has approved (Jan. 20, 2026) an ordinance that increases utility rates for the coming year.
Acting Finance Officer Twila Hoffroggee said the 5% increase applies to water, sewer and electric utility rates.
Alderman Rick Cronin and Mayor Gloria Hanson both made comments to the effect that the rate increase isn’t about making money for the City.
The new rates will be in effect when Fort Pierre’s January utility bills are sent out.

Jan. 6, 2026:
The Fort Pierre City Council has given first reading (Jan. 5, 2026) to an ordinance that increases water, sewer and electric utility rates by 5% for the coming year.
Acting Finance Officer Twila Hoffroggee noticed some tweaks needed to be made after the previous first reading of the ordinance, requiring the process to start over.
Alderman Todd Bernhard asked Hoffroggee for some details about how the amount of the utility rate increase was determined.
Hoffroggee says despite starting the ordinance approval process over, the rate increase will still become effective this month (Jan. 2026).
The second reading of the utility rate increase is expected to be on the Fort Pierre City Council’s Jan. 19, 2026, meeting agenda. If approved, the rates would go into effect. Jan. 20, 2026.
