Jan. 20, 2026:
Two people died and several were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon (Jan. 16, 2026, at 3:44pm), five miles west of Reliance.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates 50 year old Drew Allen Kellison from Locust Grove, Virginia, was the driver of a 2025 Kenworth traveling westbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 244 and had slowed down due to a possible crash in front of him.
A 2008 Mercury Sable driven by 28 year old Reed Glenholden Harter from Colome collided with the rear end of the semi, and a chain reaction of collisions including a 2025 Ford F-150, a 2013 Ford F-150, and a 2010 GMC Yukon occurred.
Harter and 27 year old Chandler Cole Bakley from Martin who was a front seat passenger in the Mercury Sable were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other passengers in the vehicle– 27 year-old Wyatt Philip Kayser from Alexandria and 26 year-old Cameron Rick Quigley from Hartford– sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Curtis W. Roberts, the 71-year-old male driver, and two passengers in the 2025 Ford F-150– 72 year old Kathy Roberts and 46 year old Megan Roberts– sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries while a fourth passenger, 19 year old Addison Roberts, was uninjured.
Wade James Ness, the 59-year-old male driver, and 54-year-old passenger Jennifer Rebecca Ness in the 2013 Ford F-150 both received serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The 52-year-old driver of the 2010 GMC Yukon, Catana Ehlers, sustained minor injuries, and the driver of the Kenworth, Drew Kellison, was not injured.
Whiteout conditions were a contributing factor in the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
