A man with a decades-long history as an educator in Pierre has been hired to be the next superintendent for the Stanley County School District in Fort Pierre.
Stanley County School Board President Chris Fosheim told DRG Media Group that the board approved the contract for Rob Coverdale during their meeting last night (Jan. 21, 2026).
Fosheim said the board was pleased with the field of candidates they had to choose from.
Coverdale said many of his closest friends are people he went to high school with and some of his mentors are the teachers and coaches that influenced him more than 35 years ago. He sincerely believes “that there is no work more important than educating our children and there has probably never been a time, at least in modern history, where our kids have had to face greater challenges.”
Coverdale graduated from Stanley County in 1990. He attended Liberty and New Liberty Country Schools before transitioning into town in 1986 for high school. He’s in his 30th year as an educator, 24 of which were in the Pierre School District. For the past three years, he’s been the superintendent at Crow Creek Tribal Schools.
Coverdale’s wife, Cheryl, is an occupational therapist. They have three sons, one daughter-in-law, and two grandsons.
Coverdale will begin his duties with the Stanley County School District July 1, 2026. Current Superintendent Dan Baldwin will retire effective June 30.
