The City of Fort Pierre might possibly be looking to Pierre as a possible provider for the town’s water supply.
Mayor Gloria Hanson says they’re just beginning to reach out to have those conversations.
Meanwhile, Hanson says Fort Pierre continues to have conversations with officials from current water supplier West River/Lyman Jones Rural Water Systems as well as helping to fund a feasibility study on expanding the Mni Wiconi Water Treatment Plant.
In 2023, the town of Fort Pierre became a member of the Western Dakota Regional Water System. Last year (2025), South Dakota lawmakers passed a joint resolution that would allow the Western Dakota Regional Water System project to pump water to Gregory, Haakon, Hughes, Jackson, Jones, Lyman, Stanley, Todd, Tripp, Bennett, Butte, Custer, Fall River, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, Mellette, Oglala Lakota, Pennington and Perkins counties.
Fort Pierre’s water contract with the West River/Lyman Jones Rural Water Systems expires in 2032.
