The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area in Pierre and Fort Pierre have earned a “Champion for Youth” award from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Champion is the highest level of the award and is determined by a Club’s advocacy on behalf of South Dakota’s youth.
Capital Area Clubs CEO Steve Steele says he and his team are “wholly committed to raising the visibility of the needs of the youth in our community, especially the ones who need us most, and show what we can accomplish with the support of our elected officials and our community.” He says Clubs have a unique role as community leaders in providing afterschool programs for youth that enable the youth to achieve great futures.
The Advocacy Engagement Recognition Program recognizes the work Clubs do every day, with an emphasis on impact, creativity and innovation. Clubs get points for impactful engagements and those points determine in which tier a Club is placed. The program consists of three tiers:
-
Advocate (first 50% of Clubs),
-
Hero (next 40% of Clubs) and
-
Champion (top 10% of Clubs).
The main location of the Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area is on Ree Street in Pierre. It also supports locations at Georgia Morse Middle School (GASP), St. Joseph’s Catholic School and T.F. Riggs High School, all in Pierre, as well as the Stanley County Gold program at the Community Youth Involved Center in Fort Pierre. The Club also provides summer programming.
Steele says Boys & Girls Clubs support opportunities for all youth, equipping young people with the experiences and tools they need to succeed. He says they raise their voices “every single day, to ensure top issues and solutions impacting young people are prioritized in our community, our state and at the national level.”
