Pierre City Commissioner Todd Johnson is running for mayor.
In a news release dropped off at DRG Media Group today (Feb. 12, 2026), Johnson says he’s worked hard in the community to identify himself as a resource and to build relationships with numerous agencies. He says he’s hearing concerns from Pierre citizens about the lack of the current city government’s “willingness to listen and be forthcoming with information that the public should know.”
Johnson says over the next three months his focus will be on “improving our support of ‘other agencies’ and repairing our working relationships with other local governments.” He says being a good listener fosters teamwork and cooperation.
Johnson is running against incumbent Mayor Steve Harding. In December (Dec. 16, 2025), Harding declared his intention to run for a fourth term.
Harding is the only person on the Pierre City Commission up for reelection in 2026. He was first elected mayor in 2017 after serving nine years as a city commissioner.
The election will be held June 2, 2026. Absentee voting for the June 2 election begins April 17.
Pierre’s mayor is a part-time position. Day-to-day operations are coordinated by City Administrator Kristi Honeywell.
