Southeast Technical College has received a $6 million state appropriation to support construction of the James Abdnor Center for Advanced Manufacturing, a major step forward in expanding hands-on training opportunities for students preparing for high-demand careers in South Dakota’s manufacturing sector.
The funding, recommended in the state budget as one-time general funds, will help advance the approximately $24 million project alongside federal, private and local contributions. Governor Larry Rhoden signed the bill, SB79, at STC earlier today.
“This investment from the State of South Dakota is a powerful vote of confidence in our students and the work happening at Southeast Tech,” said Dr. Cory Clasemann, president, STC. “We are incredibly grateful for this support of the Abdnor Center. This funding helps us continue providing hands-on training and industry-relevant education that prepares our graduates to succeed on day one in the workforce.”
Scheduled to open in Fall 2027, the James Abdnor Center for Advanced Manufacturing will feature more than 53,000 square feet of new and renovated space, including state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and collaborative learning environments. The facility will support programs such as Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance Technology, Advanced Manufacturing Automation Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Welding, creating capacity for approximately 130 additional students each year.
The project reflects Southeast Tech’s ongoing commitment to practical, career-focused education that connects students directly with industry needs.
The facility is named in honor of former U.S. Senator James Abdnor, whose legacy of service and commitment to opportunity continues to inspire investments in education and workforce development across South Dakota.
