The Pierre City Commission has approved an almost $53.7 million budget plan for 2021, a decrease of around $3.4 million from this year.
The budget includes no increases to wastewater or electric utility rates, but does include the 8% water utility rate increase voters approved to help pay for the City’s new drinking water treatment facility.
Pierre’s major ongoing projects– the drinking water treatment facility, wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation and outdoor pool project- were funded outside of the 2021 budget, allowing the City to focus on basic operating costs and equipment needs.
City finance officer Twila Hight says they receive more constituent contacts about street conditions than any other issue.
Pierre’s budget runs on a calendar year. The majority of the town’s funds come from sales tax, the rates paid for utilities and a small property tax allotment.
