PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden has officially designated Sept. 13-19, 2026, as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in South Dakota to highlight the critical need for and immense value of adult education and family literacy programs.
Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is recognized to emphasize the importance of making learning opportunities more accessible for adults and families. With an estimated 15% of adults in South Dakota lacking essential literacy skills, this week reminds us of the continued need for strong educational programs that promote lifelong learning, skill development, and personal growth.
The Adult Education and Family Literacy Program, under Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, supports these services and activities by funding basic skills courses and helping local providers offer targeted skill-building programs to strengthen employability and self-sufficiency.
