Fifth graders throughout Pierre are learning about energy in a new way this year because of a partnership between the schools and the City of Pierre.
Participating schools are given Power Team lesson plans, student workbooks and all materials needed for classroom exercises. The Power Team materials focus on types of energy, renewable and non-renewable energy resources, how to measure energy and energy conservation.
The curriculum the City is providing meets the state’s education standards and provides hands-on learning opportunities. Both Saint Joseph School and Pierre Public Schools are participating in the program and have received their lesson plans.
“The children and I love hands on learning and problem solving. This curriculum does both.” said Rachel Arbach, Jefferson Elementary Teacher.
Gay Pickner, Saint Joseph School Teacher said, “New curriculum is like a big Christmas present –and this gift doesn’t even impact our budget!”
The Power Team curriculum is provided to schools at no cost by the City of Pierre and Missouri River Energy Services. MRES is a not-for-profit whole sale power provider that supplies 40% of Pierre’s electricity.
Brad Palmer, City Utilities Director, says although the program is new to Pierre, it’s been tried out in almost 30 other communities. He says the program is popular among educators who have used it.
