Yesterday’s (Jan. 27, 2021) House floor discussion on a bill requiring birth certificates issued by the state reflect the biological sex of the newborn gave District 24’s freshmen representatives their first experience voting on a controversial piece of legislation.
After more than 45 minutes of debate, Rep. Will Mortenson of Pierre and Rep. Mike Weisgram of Fort Pierre both voted “no” (Jan. 27, 2021) on HB1076.
Mortenson says when making his decision, he reflected back on his campaign priorities.
Weisgram also didn’t see a need for the legislation.
The bill passed the South Dakota House by a 39-31 vote.
Bill sponsor Rep. Fred Deutsch of Florence says HB1076 is about capturing accurate data used in state vital records.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
