Snow and extreme cold across the central US this week sent power companies scrambling to generate enough electricity to meet the huge demand from people trying to stay warm.
One way companies tried to lighten their demand load was by asking towns with their own electricity producing capability to fire them up.
Fort Pierre mayor Gloria Hanson says they were contacted Sunday and asked to turn on their Generation Station.
She credits community leaders 30-some years ago for seeing the need to have the town’s own power backup system.
Hanson says running the Generation Station does come with a cost.
Fort Pierre shut down the Generation Station this morning (Feb. 18, 2021) and is back to normal operations.
