Today (Feb. 26, 2021), a team from AmeriCorps is finishing up a three week stay in Pierre helping Feeding South Dakota staff with a variety of tasks to supply food to those in need.
Team leader Hillary Johnson says they are serving through the National Civilian Community Corps program.
The AmeriCorps team spent two weeks in Sioux Falls and three weeks in Pierre. From here, they’ll spend three weeks in Rapid City and then go back to Sioux Falls for two more weeks.
Johnson says Feeding South Dakota has a big job to do, so they’re happy to help respond to food security needs, safely and efficiently, throughout the state.
Depending on location, Johnson says her AmeriCorps NCCC program team members are:
- preparing shelf-stable, cooler and freezer food boxes and bags for distribution;
- repackaging bulk food items;
- inventorying food donations;
- deep cleaning the warehouses;
- setting up, implementing and taking down mobile distribution sites to provide South Dakota communities with emergency food in a drive-up, contact-free manner
