The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota is climbing back up.
At Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, president and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mikel Holland says the number of hospitalizations because of the virus is also increasing.
Holland says in the US, most of the hospitalizations and deaths are unvaccinated people in their 50s.
Holland says being vaccinated against COVID is still the best way to avoid illness or hospitalization.
Holland says so far, the increase in COVID-19 cases hasn’t caused a shortage of space for Avera St. Mary’s patients.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says as of mid-week, 62.4% of the eligible US population (age 12 years and up) are fully vaccinated and 73.3% of those eligible have gotten at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
