ORIGINAL STORY NOVEMBER 1, 2021:
The city of Fort Pierre will be lighting the pedestrian bridge crossing the Bad River purple tonight (Nov. 1, 2021) for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
A bridge lighting event will take place at approximately 8pm CT, when an official City of Fort Pierre Proclamation will be read. Viewing of the bridge lighting may be observed from Fischers Lilly Park, from the parking lot by the boat ramp or from the deck of the Silver Spur Bar and Restaurant (normally closed Monday evenings, but will be open from 6-8pm for the convenience of those wanting to see the bridge lighting ceremony).
Fort Pierre mayor Gloria Hanson says, “Central South Dakota, and specifically, Pierre and Fort Pierre, have been heavily affected by pancreatic cancer in the last 20 years. Almost 50 of our local residents have been lost to this horrible disease and we hope that, by lighting the bridge, we can help residents bring attention to the discrete signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer. By identifying these symptoms early enough, residents can have a conversation with their public health care provider to explore all possibilities. With an overall 5 year survival rate of 8%, pancreatic cancer is now the 3rd leading cause of cancer death with the only possible ‘cure’ being surgical removal.”
