VERMILLION – Herreid/Selby Area’s bid for a 9A championship was stopped cold by a relentless rushing attack by the Howard Tigers.
Howard won its third football championship Thursday, using 409 yards rushing to swallow up Herreid/Selby Area 55-18 at the DakotaDome.
The Tigers’ dominance began on the second play from scrimmage when Ty Beyer rushed for the first of his two touchdowns from 65 yards.
A Tray Hettick touchdown pass to Trevor Gill to end the Wolverines’ first possession cut the lead for Howard to 7-6. But Howard then scored on each of their next five possessions on a run by Griffin Clubb, another by John Callies, a 58-yard touchdown pass from Taiden Hoyer to Jace Sifore, another Callies run and another Clubb run. The Tigers raced to a 42-6 halftime lead.
Herreid/Selby Area (12-1) had two touchdown passes from Hettick to Brenden Begeman, who had 134 yards on eight receptions and 78 yards rushing.
Callies rushed for 138 yards for Howard with three touchdowns. Clubb rushed for 115 and Beyer for 107.
Howard (12-0) won its first championship since 2014. Herreid/Selby Area lost a title game for the second time in three seasons.
