Funeral services for Carlton Sam, 75, of Aberdeen and formerly of Wakpala will be at 11 AM, CT< Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Wakpala Community Center. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A procession will leave Kesling Funeral Home Friday at 4 PM to the community center for an all night wake with services at 7 PM. Carlton passed away Thursday November 25, 2021, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
On October 19, 1946, Carlton Keith Sam was born to Don and Eva (Young Hawk) Sam in Carson City, Nevada. Don and Carl relocated to Wakpala, South Dakota after Eva passed away in a car accident. Carl was raised by Harry and Annie Bone Club until he graduated from Wakpala High School on May 22, 1964. After Carl attended Northern State University in 1964-1965. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Korea. He was Honorably Discharged on October 27, 1972. After his service he returned to Wakpala and began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Road Department. Carl married Cindy Ducheneaux in 1973 and together they had one daughter Stephanie Dawn Sam. Carl then moved his family to Aberdeen, SD in 1983 where he worked and retired from Federal Service in 2009.
Carl will always be remembered for spending time with his very special grandson Hunter Lee Grey Cloud. Together they would spend hours at the Grand River fishing and hunting. Carl also will be remembered for helping and teaching anyone he could whether it be friends, family, nieces, and nephews. Carl was truly the World’s Greatest Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Brother anyone could ever ask for. He will be greatly miss by all.
Carl is survived by Stephanie Sam, daughter of Aberdeen, SD; Hunter Grey Cloud, grandson of Aberdeen, SD; Josie (David) Ducheneaux, sister of Aberdeen, SD; Donna Sam, sister of Aberdeen, SD; Gerald Sam, brother of Wakpala, SD and Donavon Sam, brother of Wakpala, SD. His numerous nieces and nephews and grandchildren.
Carl is preceded in death by Don Sam, father; Eva (Young Hawk) Sam, mother; Roselyn Sam, stepmother; Grandparents: Harry and Annie Bone Club, Joseph Sam, brother and Geraldine Sam, sister.
