Mass of Christian Burial for Marcus Lesmeister, 87, of Mobridge will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM Monday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Marcus passed away Friday, December 3, 2021, at his home in Mobridge.
Marcus Lesmeister was born to Bregetta (Burckhard) and Frank Lesmeister in their farm home near Eagle Butte, SD, on April 14, 1934. Sharing his life were 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He spoke only German when he went to first grade in a country school. There he learned English and began attending Eagle Butte School graduating from high school in 1952. While in high school he took a few saxophone lessons.
He put his musical talent to use in a Gettysburg Dance Band for a few years before going to the US Army in 1957 and serving in Germany.
After two years of corresponding with Audrey Wagner they were married on June 18, 1959.
Farming and ranching had been his lifelong career. Their dairy farming in Minnesota lasted from 1959 to 1965. The rest of their lives were spent farming and ranching in Corson County. He was an early irrigator and always kept implementing the latest technologies. He also attended the veterans farm schooling program.
Marcus was an originator of the Mission Township where he served as a supervisor for many years.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish family and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Eucharistic minister, sacristan, rosary leader and parish greeter. He enjoyed explaining and sharing his faith with newcomers through the RCIA program.
Marcus and Audrey taught adult dance classes through the community education program. They could often be found dancing and socializing with their friends. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, painting, playing music on multiple instruments at one time. Sharing those talents with his family and traveling brought him much joy. They traveled extensively, even to visit their exchange student in Paris and to nine European countries. We were poor but rich with family, friends and love.
Marcus is survived by his wife, Audrey of Mobridge, son, Jeff of St. Paul, MN, 9 grandchildren, brother, Lawrence (Charlotte) of Deadwood, and 21 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Keith, brothers, Adam and Louie, sisters, Helen and Tracy.
