Lucille was born to George and Ella (Joens) Webb on September 29, 1924, the second of twelve children in Eagle Butte. She told stories of riding a horse to Butte View School, with two of her brothers, Dude and Honey. Lunch was always a peanut butter and syrup sandwich. As a youngster she enjoyed helping her mother with housework.
She attended Eagle Butte High School. On July 21, 1941 she married Elmer Berndt in Pierre, SD and they made their home on a ranch that is located north of Eagle Butte, where they raised five children.
Lucille enjoyed cooking and baking, and people loved her cinnamon rolls and donuts. She was always up for a rummy game. Lucille taught herself to crochet at the age of 70 and for many years she enjoyed making doilies and giving them to family and friends. Her home was a gathering place, including on her 97th birthday where she celebrated with her family. She remained involved and interested in the running of the ranch and was able to live in her own home until the hospitalization that preceded her death. Lucille had a fierce love of family, and she will be dearly missed by all.
Lucille is survived by her daughter, MaryAnn (Richard) Zann of Fenton, MI; three sons all of Eagle Butte, Bob (Marie) Berndt, Elmer, Jr. “Prune” (JoEllen) Berndt, and James “Ted” (Laurie) Berndt; one brother, Melvin Webb; 17 grandchildren, Robert, Laura, Edward, Amy, John, Christian, Wendy, Randy, Cindy, Peggy, Kelly, Jason, Willie, Tommy, RaeAnne, Matt and Nicholas; 23 great grandchildren, Ricky, Taylor, Gabriella, Isabella, Julia, Holden, Hadley, Molly, Jackson, Lila, Trevor, Katie, Jessica, Caleb, Hannah, Lewvi, Sara, Kolby, Thomas, Adam, Emma, Dre; and 4 great, great grandchildren, Carter, Connor, Magnolia and Parker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; daughter, Delilia; and her siblings, Jim, William “Dude”, Lyle “Toad, Wayne “Punk”, Martin “Honey”, Irene, Ray, Betty, Lee and Gene “Bumper”.
