The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has sobriety checkpoints planned in 19 counties this month (May).
Central South Dakota counties where checkpoints are scheduled include Hughes, Lyman, Stanley and Walworth. Other counties where sobriety checkpoints will be held are Brown, Brookings, Butte, Codington, Clay, Davison, Hamlin, Jerauld, Lake, Lincoln, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Roberts and Yankton.
Checkpoints are held each month in different counties and are designed to discourage people from drinking and then driving. The checkpoints are funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and conducted by the South Dakota Highway Patrol with the help of local law enforcement.
