Delbert Ernest Johnson was born at Eagle Butte I.H.S. Hospital, on May 18, 1963, to Arvilla D.
Laundreaux-Johnson and to stepfather, Howard Johnson. He grew up in Gettysburg, SD on a
farm when he was little boy. Then he spent his education in Gettysburg, Swiftbird, and Eagle
Butte, SD. He graduated from Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School.
Delbert lived in Rapid City, Sturgis, and Eagle Butte, SD, where he last stayed with sister,
Deanna, and then he moved to the Cheyenne River Motel. When he was living with Deanna, he
had many different jobs in Eagle Butte. Delbert was a hard worker and had many different jobs
throughout his lifetime.
He loved going to church on Sundays and Wednesdays where he helped Paster Owen and family.
His desire was to help many different people and he enjoyed sharing what he had with others
from church. He also loved horses and taking of them, and he loved the country life. There were
many different people in his life that he took the time to visit when he could. He would always
be there to tell you the news about what was going on in Eagle Butte. He had a way of letting
you know who you were to him, by giving you a nick name. He gave nick names to some of his
family members like Jason Dupris aka “Rube Bar” and Scott Jr. aka “Stud Muffin”. He had his
own way of showing you he cared by stopping by and bringing things to you, like his niece,
Robbie, when he would bring over water, toilet paper, and food. He would always greet you with
a smile every time, and he would wave at you always.
Delbert is survived by his daughter, Tashina Johnson of Sioux Falls; sister, Deanna Laundreaux
of Eagle Butte; niece, Robbie Knight of Eagle Butte; grandsons: Adam Barbosa and Melkai
Knight of Eagle Butte; granddaughter, Nature High Elk of Eagle Butte; and many other family
members.
He is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Arvilla Johnson; grandparents, Joe and Amelia
Laundreaux; and niece, Heather Knight.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Delbert’s arrangements.
