Young adults attending college across the country are settling into their first few weeks of classes. With that in mind, a new scam is out there which is targeting this population of young adults.
South Dakota’s State Director of the Better Business Bureau, Jessie Schmidt says scammers are sending out a text or email saying they work for the finical aid office. These messages say there is a COVID-19 relief fund out there for college students. She explained there are links that will send students on a chase. Sometimes it’ll ask them to spend money to get money, or it may ask them for personal information.
Schmidt said the reason this is working is because college students could use extra money. She believes the reason students are falling for these scams is because they don’t have a lot of experience when it comes to determining if something is legit or a scam.
If you do have any questions on if something is a scam, Schmidt encourages you to reach out to the Better Business Bureau.
