PIERRE – Pierre Governor Athletics looks to recover from the increase of COVID-19 cases and the quarantining of those with close contacts at Riggs High School. On Friday, as reported by Dakota Radio Group News Director Jody Heemstra, the Pierre School Board approved a hybrid schedule for Riggs, with students in large classes alternating days between being in the classroom and learning virtually.
Pierre Athletic Director Brian Moser said just after the meeting that this should not only not change matters within Governor Athletics, it should make the situation eventually better.
The Governors cancelled their football game at Tea Area because several players either caught the virus or were quarantined. Moser said that unfortunately, such situations are often inevitable.
For now, Moser does not plan on changing policies for those attending Governor sporting events and asks fans to be careful and respectful.
Moser does not want to place limits, as some AA schools have, on how many can attend sporting events.
These are the statuses of postponed games:
- 9/17 Soccer @ Sioux Falls Roosevelt – rescheduled for Monday, September 28 (both varsity matches at 6:00 PM)
- 9/18 Football @ Tea Area – cancelled, will not be made up
- 9/18 Volleyball vs. Yankton – rescheduled for Friday, October 30 – 7:00 PM
- 9/19 Volleyball vs. Douglas – rescheduled for Saturday, October 31 – 1:00 PM
Boys’ golf did not compete in its scheduled event Friday at Mitchell. Competitive cheer/dance did not compete Saturday at Brookings and will not on Tuesday at Huron. Cross country did not compete Saturday at the Clyde Cotton Invitational in Huron.
