Today’s (Oct. 9) update from the South Dakota Department of Health showed 772 new cases of COVID-19 in the state since yesterday.
Hughes County currently has 137 active cases of COVID-19, 59 of them are connected to the State Women’s Prison in Pierre.
State Women’s Prison Units A, B, C and D as of 9:30am today:
• 11 staff, 7 recovered
• 73 inmates, 70 recovered
Unit E (separate building located behind the Women’s Prison):
• 0 staff
• 52 inmates, 0 recovered
Pierre Community Work Center (located east of the main prison and the National Guard Armory):
• 7 staff, 7 recovered
• 113 inmates, 113 recovered
Coronavirus patients currently occupy 11% of the staffed hospital beds in the state. Other patients are using 51% of the staffed beds leaving 38% available. Of the staffed intensive care unit beds in the state, COVID-19 patients are using 20%, other patients occupy 53% and 27% are available to be used.
