When the COVID-19 pandemic started in the US, medical providers weren’t sure what to expect.
During an update to the Pierre City Commission last night (Oct. 13), President and Chief Medical Officer at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre Dr. Mike Holland says there was a lot of speculation, modeling and predicting.
He says medical providers have learned quite a bit about coronavirus since the pandemic began, but testing for it has been “frustrating.”
Holland says the hospital in Pierre didn’t have many COVID-19 patients admitted until last month.
Holland says they’ve become so busy with COVID-19 patients that hospital staff are reviewing the surge plans they developed in the spring.
What the next few weeks and months will be like, Holland says, difficult to predict.
According to yesterday’s (Oct. 13) information on the covid.sd.gov website, there are three hospital beds occupied by coronavirus patients, two of those are in the intensive care unit, but non currently require the use of a ventilator.
