While possession and ingestion of marijuana become legal in the state starting July 1, 2021, the state Department of Revenue and legislators have until April 2022 to work out the details for the legalization of growing, manufacturing, transporting and selling marijuana in the state.
Like other towns in South Dakota, the Fort Pierre City Council is looking into what its next steps are and alderman Mike Weisgram says he’s been talking with the state Municipal League.
Weisgram says once the state works out the details, municipalities will use the information to create their own marijuana ordinances.
He says the South Dakota Retailers Association also plans to be involved in working out the details.
Constitutional Amendment A on South Dakota’s general election ballot legalized the recreational use of marijuana for individuals 21 years old and older. Under the measure, individuals are allowed to possess or distribute up to one ounce of marijuana. The amendment required the State Legislature to pass laws providing for a program for medical marijuana and the sale of hemp by April 1, 2022.
